There are alternative virtual credit card services available, but I haven't used them so don't know much about them, meaning can't personally vouch for any. Other than being a satisfied user willing to speak positively about my use of their service, I'm in no way affiliated with nor sponsored by them. I've used for years without any problems, and I'm a fan of the service. Can sign into the site, click a few things, and in maybe half a min spent you've now basically got a vendor-locking Visa gift card to hand out. Just create a card with whatever total spending limit you want, and then let them know the card info. Worst case scenario you still only lose $10.įorgot your friend's bday and want a quick and easy last minute present? The only way someone else could use the card without authorization is if they use it for payment at the same streaming service, AND also manage to snipe a payment in through the window between the time when the card does its' monthly reload and whenever the vendor charges you. Since all cards are automatically vendor locked, even if the card info were to get leaked somehow (maybe you got hacked, or the streaming service got hacked, or maybe for funzies you posted your card info publicly somewhere like youtube or something lul) then it's not a huge deal. If the service ever tries to charge more than that then the payment will fail. Either way you won't ever be charged more than the $3.Īre you ok with paying $10 monthly for a streaming service but would rather opt out if they try raising the price on you?Ĭreate a new card with $10 monthly limit. Or if you think someday you might want to use the same card again, could just leave it set at $3 total limit. Can sign up using whatever name and address you want, pay the $3, then permanently burn the card. Simply create a new 1-time use card and set the total spending limit to $3. Want to check out even the shadiest looking free trial of some super sketchy looking site without worry of even being charged? Or perhaps would like to pay $3 for a month of service somewhere and not have to worry about some fine print saying that after the first month you get charged a $200 anual fee? Makes it trivially easy to avoid a wide variety of malicious / shady credit or debit card charges such as hidden fees, free trials that count on you forgetting to unsub before the trial expires, recurring charges with unexpected rising costs, recurring subscriptions that seemingly make unsubscribing as difficult as they can, etc. I don't trust that it will be easy to cancelĬould avoid a lot of potential headaches by using a virtual credit card service.Ĭould use a service like (which is free) to create customizable throwaway cards that return whatever personal billing info you give to a vendor (like your name) as correct even if fake, includes vendor locking so after the first use the card can only ever be used at the same vendor, and offers a lot of control over when and how much you can be charged by offering various preset spending limit settings.
